Sonar Quartett

Founded in 2006 and concentrating on the performance of 21st-century music, the Sonar Quartett quickly attained an excellent reputation in the new music scene and was praised for their “breathtaking music making” marked by “accuracy of ensemble playing, vigor, sonic expressivity and meticulous differentiation.” (Gisela Nauck, Positionen) In the last three years, thanks to their close association with contemporary composers, the Sonar Quartett presented twenty world premieres, among them ten works written for the Sonar Quartett. Displaying “a rarely seen sense of humor, emotion and desire for experimentation on today’s Avant-Garde concert stages” (Frank Kämpfer, Deutschlandfunk), they are welcome guest performers at large and small festivals worldwide. They have appeared at the Ultraschall Festival, the Hessian Radio’s Young China, the Siemens Arts Program, the Randspiele Zepernick, the Ostrava Days, the Intersonanzen Potsdam, the Tage Neuer Musik Zurich, the Pan Music Festival Seoul, the Forum Neuer Musik Cologne, the Tage Neuer Musik Weimar and the Tage Zeitgemäßer Musik Bludenz. They have also performed in such established venues as the Konzerthaus, the Radialsystem, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin as well as in galleries, unused public pools or jazz clubs. The Sonar Quartett initiated various concert series to better realize their programming ideas. Founded in 2007 and supported by the Initiative Neue Musik Berlin and the Deutsche Musikrat, “Berlin im Quadrat” aims at showcasing the young composition scene in Berlin. In July 2010 the four musicians organized their first of concert of a series of two annual subscription concerts, in which they combine contemporary works with Avant-Garde compositions from previous eras. In 2010, in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk and the Label NEOS, the quartet launched their CD debut. In January 2011 their recording of Georg Katzer’s string quartets received the prize of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik. In 2011 they recorded works by Ursula Mamlok for Bridge Records.
