Stefan Asbury
Stefan Asbury gained scholarships to Oxford University and the Royal College of Music and studied composition with Oliver Knussen. Conducting studies continued in America at the Tanglewood Music Center as a recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Fellowship. Since Tanglewood, where he holds the position of Associate Director of New Music Activities, he has worked closely with Oliver Knussen, Sir Simon Rattle and Michael Tilson Thomas. He also holds the post of Co-Director of the Oxford Contemporary Music Festival.
Asbury has established himself as one of today’s leading exponents of contemporary music and works with virtually all the major contemporary ensembles in Europe. He has recently been appointed Music Director/Chief Conductor of the contemporary resident ensemble of the new venue, Casa da Musica in Porto. Recent concerts have included concerts with London Sinfonietta, ASKO Ensemble, the Philharmonia (both in their Music of Today series and as part of the Takemitsu Festival), Ensemble Intercontemporain, Musikfabrik and Ensemble Modern.
