Germán Romero

Germán Romero (b.1966) was born in Mérida, Yucatán, in 1966. He studied Composition at the Escuela Nacional de Música of the UNAM with Julio Estrada, Arturo Márquez, and Mario Lavista in the  Conservatorio Nacional (1985-87). He studied guitar with Federico Bañuelos (1987-91).  In 1992 and 1998 he participated at the guitar workshop in Darmstadt and in 1994 he was a guest resident faculty in Les Ateliers UPIC, in France. He has been awarded with several grants from the FONCA, from the Coordinación Nacional de Descentralización Zona Sur(1998), FENCA from Yucatán (Creadores con Trayectoria, 1999) and CONACULTA-INBA (Educación por el Arte, 2002).   His Cuarteto de Cuerdas Nº3 received an honor mention at the Primer Concurso Nacional de Composición Silvestre Revueltas (2000) and was one of the ten selected works at the 47th International Rostrum of Composers (2000), to be internationally broadcasted.  In  2000 together with the Yucatan State Government he produced a CD titled “El Principio”.  In 2002 the Radar Festival 2002 commissioned “Ramas”, for solo violin, which was premiered and recorded by Irvine Arditti.  Currently he is a professor of Composition, Analysis and head of the Ear Training division at the Conservatorio de las Rosas, in Morelia, Michoacán, working at the same time as a consultant of the Consejo Consultivo de Música from the Instituto de Cultura from Yucatán.
