Steven Subotnick

Steven Subotnick is an internationally recognized independent animator. After studying painting, anthropology, and filmmaking, he studied experimental animation with Jules Engel at California Institute of the Arts, where he made several award-winning films and earned his MFA in 1986. After graduation, he worked for three years as the Director of Rhode Island School of Design’s Academic Computer Center where he introduced computers to faculty and students. Since then, he has taught animation at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (1989-92) and at Rhode Island School of Design, where he is currently an adjunct faculty member. Many of his students have made award-winning films and have gone on to develop careers in TV, feature, and commercial animation. In addition to teaching, Subotnick also works commercially as a freelance animator and director. He has animated for CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, web sites, and has directed commercials. He continues to produce his own independent animated films which include both computer-assisted and hand-made imagery, and abstract as well as narrative elements. Recent works include Devil’s Book, a collaged and calligraphic abstraction, and Hairyman, a fractured folk tale using a variety of animation styles. He currently lives in Rhode Island with his wife and fellow filmmaker, Amy Kravitz.
